The Antiqued Antique

Submitted by admin on Thu, 02/14/2008 - 18:47.

This violin was probably made in Germany at the turn of the century.  The one thing that is interesting about how this violin was finished is that whoever made it was that even he was making a brand new violin he tried to make it look old.  The technique was to put dints and dents and wear marks in the finish to make look like an antique.  The technique was to use small chains to score the wood. That is the inspiration for the name.

Our luthier replaced the pegs, the strings, the bridge, the sound post, finger board and the nut.  He touched up the varnish, cleaned and polished the finish and set up the violin.

The violin plays loud and does not sound as mellow as a classical violin should.  It has that brightness that makes it very suitable for fiddling.  Those that play it immediately go to the fiddle songs in their memory and you see them smile with glee as they play.  It sounds like a fiddle should sound. With some changes and different strings it could be made into a classical violin but it is much better as a fiddle.
