Knopf Violin - For Sale

Submitted by admin on Thu, 02/14/2008 - 19:37.

Inside of the violin you can see the label.  It clearly is printed Henry Richard Knopf.  At the one end of the label is the number 318 and at the other No. 312.  The second line states New York, Anno 1923.

Our luthiery reconditioned the violin and looked it over very closely.  He is not familiar with Knopf violins as this is an American violin.  Mario may well have found it somewhere in New York or Pennsylvania. It is a well made violin and has a nice sound.  The appraisal was based on the construction and the sound of the violin. It is interesting that similar violins sell for the same price based on the possibility that they are an actual Knopf.

I was contacted by one of H. R. Knopf's family members and she let the family know this was available. However, there were no takers. I imagine if they wanted one by now they would have had one as he made several hundred.

So at the very least this is a very nice violin that is pleasant to look at. It has a nice sound and it is in new playing condition.

One last note to the authenticity of the origin of this violin is that if knowledgable people try to steal it from you, there is a good chance it is authentic. Yes, a dealer from New York did try to steal it from me after I didn't buy into his arguement that it was a "commercial copy". So by that guage I think that this is a piece of authentic Amercan violin history.

If you are interested in purchasing a violin you can send me a message using the contact us form. I prefer to use Paypal for the transaction. Paypal is capable of accepting all major credit cards.
